Los Angeles is home to more than 40,000 homeless men, women, and children (LAHSA, homeless count, 2015), many of who are food insecure. We believe that every person deserves to have food and hygiene supplies regardless of their housing status.
We will assemble bags of supplies to provide resources to these homeless individuals to contribute to their efforts to meet their basic needs. Our goal is to make an impact in our community by providing items that may be difficult for individuals to acquire when they lack permanent housing, such as first aid, feminine hygiene products, condoms, and a range of foods to meet a number of nutritional needs.
Along with reusable backpacks, some of the items we strive to include in our bags are:
Healthy nonperishable snack foods (bars, applesauce, trail mix, crackers with peanut butter) We always need additional snacks for people with dental problems and diabetic diets
Water
Socks
Adult diapers
Menstrual pads
Condoms
First aid supplies
Diapers for infants
Sunscreen
Toothbrush and Toothpaste
Combs
Emergency blankets
Additional items many of us use on a daily basis
We are proud to announce our partnership with these great companies.

Amanda Yoshioka-Maxwell has always felt that service to others is an important part of her life. Ever since she was a child she has volunteered with homeless communities and animal rescues, finding immense fulfillment, not only in helping others, but bringing awareness to the issues impacting all members of our communities. One of her first jobs as an undergrad at USC was spent distributing sack lunches and service referrals to individuals in the community experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, and she has focused her work and research on issues related to risk factors impacting homeless youth and adults.
Amanda has her MSW and is finishing a PhD at USC in the School of Social Work. Her work and research over the past 15 years has focused on harm reduction for a variety of issues impacting homeless communities. She has engaged in clinical and research-based work with homeless adults, adolescents, and foster youth. Her goal in starting Giving Back Packs was to address some of the gaps in access to food and hygiene products among those homeless adults who do not utilize services on a daily basis. She hopes to impact the struggle that so many people experience; daily acquisition of food and hygiene supplies.
In her spare time, Amanda is an avid (compulsive) runner and loves spending time outdoors, trail running, hiking, and camping. She is an obsessive dog parent, amazing wife, proficient baker, and overall homebody.
